Faculty of Education is the parent body of the Department of Physical Science Education. The department is an off shoot of the former department of Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Measurement and Evaluation. In March 2014 there was a review and restructuring of the department in line with the bench mark of National University Commission (NUC) which led to the creation of three (3) departments out of the former one.

The department of Physical Science Education offers course leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Education with teaching subjects in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Admission into the programme is either by Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) or ;by Direct Entry candidates with NCE admitted to do the 3 years or 2 years degree programme depending upon the entry qualifications.

Programmes housed in the Department are B.Sc:

i. Education Chemistry
ii. Education Mathematics
iii. Education Physics

The philosophy of Science Education is necessarily derived from the National Policy of Education. Man in his environment has so many unique attribute which must been influenced by social, physical, cultural and technological environment.

There unique characteristics could be position or negative factor that can promote peace, growth, security or generate discord among different nation. Science has deep influence into the life and activities of modern living. We are living in age of science and all our activities are controlled and governed by science. What we experience and use in our day to day life is influenced by the knowledge and principles of science. Science viz Chemistry, Physics and Maths has changed the whole pattern of society and has affected the social as well as physical environment. We cannot expect to live and adjust in the world of today by remaining aloof and ignorant of the knowledge of and facts of science.

The objectives of good teaching in Science have undergone an immense change during the last few decades. Society is now demanding conceptual change in science teaching; nature of science and scientific enterprise. The aims of science teaching include the following:

b) To familiarize the students with the important role played by science in their daily life.
c) To provide a training to students in method of science.
d) To develop in students a scientific culture.
e) To emphasis upon students the role of science on social behavior.
f) To prepare students for those vocations which require a sound foundation in science with special reference to Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
g) To develop scientific attitude and science-related values among student by inculcating scientific temper.

The department of Physical Science Education usually expect prospective degree and higher degree students to possess element of liberal education to permit them to exercise their function as intellectual leaders and teachers. The undergraduate programme is aimed at producing subject matter specialist at a higher degree level, the main trust is to train educators with leadership skill, scholarship, will breadth and depth of vision to function as foundation specialists in education. Hence the higher degree programmes of the department of Physical Science Education are designed to produce professionally qualified science educators and educationist who are capable of assuming leadership positions in government, education programmes, Secondary schools, Colleges ofEducation and Universities.

The vision of the department and the programme (Physics, Chemistry and Maths) will be to produce graduates in the area of sciences for roles in the society, nationally and internationally and also a place of excellence for science instructions in terms of research, methodology, strategies and production of resource materials for physical science education. Also the development of abilities and skills, training for better living and scientific appreciation.
